Concern over exodus from Switzerland of researchers unable to access EU money looks unfounded
Researchers recently awarded prestigious European Research Council grants are planning to stay at Swiss institutions even though they will be unable to access their ERC funding.
A disagreement between Switzerland and the EU means researchers based in the country are frozen out of the bloc’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, of which the ERC is a part. Academics have previously warned of a potential “exodus” if Switzerland’s ERC winners take the easily portable grants to other countries.
