Women win record 43% of latest ERC Starting Grants


First funding round under Horizon Europe leads to most gender-balanced results ever

Women have won 43 per cent of the highly sought Starting Grants awarded by the European Research Council under its 2021 funding round—the highest share in the awards’ history.

However, the total success rate for applicants fell by about a quarter, amid longstanding concerns that the ERC has an insufficient budget to support all of the excellent applications it receives.
