ERC set to decide on broader use of lump-sum funding

Move follows warning from former president that funding mode could erode focus on scientific quality

The European Research Council is set to decide in June whether to introduce lump-sum funding for one of its three flagship schemes starting in 2024.

With the lump-sum funding mode, grant-winners set out their plans in greater detail in advance, and then receive funds for achieving certain milestones rather than tracking their costs and claiming them back at the end of a project.
