Academic groups outraged as member states push for cuts to already under-pressure European Research Council
Academic leaders have decried moves by EU member state governments to cut the 2023 budget of the EU’s Horizon Europe R&D programme, including its European Research Council, which has already been forced to slash grant programmes for the year.
On 13 July, governments in the Council of the EU agreed to seek a €663 million cut to the €12.3 billion Horizon Europe budget for 2023 proposed by the European Commission. Within this, they want to cut the €2.13bn allocation for the ERC by €122m.
