Redirecting money could enable European Research Council to award more grants, says top Commission official

A number of EU member states are considering using money from the bloc’s regional programmes to boost research funders such as the European Research Council, according to a top European Commission official.

In an exit interview with Research Professional News, departing research and innovation director-general Jean-Eric Paquet said he understood that “a couple of member states” are looking at taking up this as-yet-unused option, which was introduced in the EU’s 2021-27 R&I programme Horizon Europe.
