Defence fund must ‘avoid unnecessary duplication’ in R&D

Council of the EU warns against fragmentation of defence technologies and seeks more R&D collaboration

The European Commission should ensure there is no “unnecessary duplication” of research under the European Defence Fund, national leaders of the bloc have said.

In an official position paper on the EDF, the Council of the EU stressed the need for R&D money through the fund to support “collaborative development” of defence technologies. The Council said this would contribute to “reducing the risk of unnecessary duplication” and mitigating against “the fragmentation of defence products and technologies” across the bloc.
