EU R&D workforce share up to second in the G20

Share rose by a quarter in a decade, data show

The proportion of EU workers either doing research or supporting it rose from 1.1 per cent in 2007 to 1.4 per cent in 2017—an increase of 27 per cent—according to the latest figures from the EU statistics agency Eurostat, published on 2 June.

This 2017 share was the second highest in the G20 group of world-leading economies, according to the report. The EU trailed only South Korea, whose share increased from 1.11 per cent in 2007 to 1.76 per cent in 2017 (an increase of 59 per cent).
