Charitable arm of high-energy physics lab will fund technology development with wider potential than research
Cern, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, has announced that it is launching a charitable fund for developing the technologies it uses for research so that they can deliver broader societal benefits.
The Technology Impact Fund, announced on 18 March, will first focus on redeveloping a laser instrument, designed to measure tiny movements around the lab’s massive machinery, as a more accurate alternative to existing earthquake detectors.
