EU to work on getting more out of research outputs

More intellectual property management, events and sharing best practices suggested to maximise benefits

The European Commission wants to help EU countries squeeze more benefits from research, after governments shared their best practices around the topic and their thoughts on it.

In a report of those survey responses, published on 22 February, the Commission said it is considering new initiatives to support ‘knowledge valorisation’.

It said it plans to update its 2008 recommendations on intellectual property management, talk more about knowledge valorisation with EU member states, and host events for experts to share best practices.

The Commission also said it might explore setting up a competition for rewarding the best methods for getting more out of research outputs.

“The fight against the coronavirus has demonstrated the crucial role of research and innovation in informing policy, in making our societies resilient and in rebuilding the economy,” its report said.

“Valorising research results and scientific knowledge is key to deliver new responses to the challenges and opportunities the EU is facing, in particular the twin climate and digital transitions.”

Promoting the report, the Commission’s top R&D official, Jean-Eric Paquet, said sharing best practices in value creation was “key” for the European Research Area, a set of EU policies to raise research standards.
