Athlone and Limerick technology institutes propose forming single academic unit

Two institutes of technology have submitted a formal application to merge and become the latest Irish higher education institution under an ambitious government programme that joins separate institutions into technical universities.

The latest Technical University will be formed through the amalgamation of the Athlone Institute of Technology and the Limerick Institute of Technology, the government announced on 23 November. The two institutes will be dissolved but will retain their existing campuses, and the new university will operate from both locations.
