Ireland’s government calls for research on four-day week

Funding available for projects that examine social, economic and environmental implications of move

Ireland’s government has asked the country’s researchers to study the “social, economic and environmental implications” of reduced working time—in particular a proposed national four-day working week.

An upcoming call for proposals, set to be formally announced on 1 July, will seek to examine how a four-day week would impact a host of social, economic and environmental indicators. These include greenhouse gas emissions and resource consumption, employment levels, competitiveness of businesses, staff productivity and wellbeing, and gender equality.
