Italians score big in Starting Grant competition but battle to attract excellence at home
Italy is slowly improving its success at winning grants from the European Research Council, with Italian scientists placing second behind those from Germany in the latest round of Starting Grants.
Out of the 436 starting grants—worth a total of €677 million—53 went to Italian researchers. However, the country does less well when it comes to attracting ERC winners to Italy. Just 20 Starting Grants will be carried out at Italian higher education institutions, the data showed.
