Investment could help boost research and tackle chronic inequalities, but doubts remain

In Italy, 2022 has begun with a battle to win cash for universities. The country’s research and academic community is undergoing a formidable stress test, as it tries to secure EU funding from the bloc’s post-Covid recovery plan that will, hopefully, flood the system with unprecedented amounts of money.

The strict deadlines set by the European Commission, which are the same for all EU countries, pose an unusually hard challenge for Italy—it is the only member state that requested the maximum amount available both for non-repayable contributions and for loans (about €191 billion in total).
