Italy’s billion-euro bet on research

Country set to fund dozens of research sites with €4.48 billion EU pandemic-recovery cash

Italy’s researchers will soon receive long-awaited funds to create cutting-edge research centres and infrastructures across the country, with €4.48 billion over the next three years coming from the EU’s big-spending Covid-recovery fund.

Four funding schemes were launched at the end of 2021 by the Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) to establish five national centres on “key enabling technologies”; 12 local "innovation ecosystems"; at least 20 research infrastructures; and at least 10 infrastructures for innovation.
