Italy’s approach to research evaluation has come a long way since the ‘Gelmini reform’

Ask Italian academics about the country’s research evaluation exercises and the most common answer will echo Winston Churchill’s famous quote about democracy. It’s the worst possible way to judge researchers and university professors, except for all the other ways that have been tried.

The current system is the result of a slow process.
