Minister tells Dutch universities to improve work-life balance

Ingrid van Engelshoven criticises excessive staff workloads, temporary contracts and discrimination

The Dutch science minister has urged universities to reduce work pressures and create a safe and engaging environment for academics.

In a letter to parliament, Ingrid van Engelshoven reminded universities that—despite budgetary limits—it was their responsibility to improve personnel policy and lower workplace stress. The Dutch government is in caretaker mode, pending coalition talks, and Van Engelshoven said it was up to the next government to decide whether to increase higher education funding.
