Applied research institutes need infrastructure windfall, report says

Dutch institutes’ success under threat as spending on facilities falls short

The quality and impact of applied research at the five TO2 institutions in the Netherlands is at risk because of insufficient investment in large-scale research facilities, an evaluation has shown.

The TO2 comprises five institutes of applied science and technology, covering fields including agriculture, civil and marine engineering and the energy transition. In 2019, their total research budget was €1.15 billion, of which €460 million came from public sources.
