Report deems Chinese-Dutch cooperation ‘attractive but risky’

Rathenau Institute recommends strong legal support to help academics working with Chinese partners and companies

Scientific cooperation between the Netherlands and China is booming, but there are risks around intellectual property rights and dual-use research, according to a report.

A study published by the Rathenau Institute, which facilitates public debate on science, found that the number of Chinese researchers working at Dutch universities increased from 400 in 2007 to 700 in 2019. According to Bilal Demirel, one of the authors of the report, cooperation is especially strong in environmental and agricultural sciences.
