Open letter highlights potential negative effects of abandoning journal impact factor in Dutch academic assessment

More than 170 scientists have written an open letter to Dutch universities, asking them to rethink plans to drop traditional metrics such as journal impact factors for hiring and promotion.

Academics in the sciences and biomedicine in particular could lose their international position and competitive edge because “it is no longer clear what they are being assessed on”, the group wrote. Their letter was published after the science journal Nature reported that Utrecht University was to stop using journal impact factors and the h-index—which measures author productivity and impact.
