The Netherlands supported strict conditions for EU Covid-19 recovery funds—but it cannot meet them
The Netherlands is the only country in the EU that has not yet submitted a national Covid-19 recovery plan, with several other countries already receiving the first payouts from the huge effort to help EU economies bounce back from the pandemic.
The Dutch government, in caretaker mode since the general election in March, missed the deadline of 30 April to submit its roadmap for spending under the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility. The government said it would be up to the next cabinet to decide what to prioritise and submit a plan by April 2022. Now, the Netherlands has one year less in which to spend the €6 billion to which it is entitled before the end of 2026.
