Advisers urge Dutch government to create plastics R&D programme

More funding for plastics research is needed to transition to a circular economy, report says

The Netherlands must focus more of its research spending on developing decomposable plastics if it is to meet its target of becoming a circular economy by 2050, a report has said.

The Circular Plastic Chain 2050 report, issued this week by the government-appointed Plastics Transition Team, says that a lot of research and innovation will be needed to meet the circular economy goal. It will be possible to achieve a circular plastic chain in the target time, it says, but this requires funding for industry to develop plastics that decompose into harmless substances in nature.
