Dutch minister calls for shared standards on PhD granting rights

   

Law change to boost powers of associate professors was successful but needs clarification, Dijkgraaf says

The Dutch science minister has asked universities to develop shared standards on who can and cannot grant a PhD, following a positive evaluation of a law change that allowed associate professors to do so.

In a letter to parliament, minister Robbert Dijkgraaf wrote that an evaluation had shown that extending the right to award PhDs had had a positive influence on different aspects of academic life. This included improving the gender balance at universities and giving doctoral students a wider choice of supervisors.
