Danish beef scandal prompts principles for sponsored research

University group launches principles and guidelines for research involving co-funding, collaboration or consultancy

The Danish government and the lobby group Danish Universities have launched a set of principles and guidelines for research on which universities collaborate with external authorities, organisations or companies, with the aim of avoiding a repeat of a 2019 scandal around research independence.

Published on 1 February, the principles and recommendations apply to research with external sources of funding, such as companies, as well as provision of research-based consultancy or services for government. They consider concepts such as research transparency and academic freedom, and offer recommendations on how collaboration should take place, for example in relation to quality assurance, preparation of a contract and agreements on publication.
