Norway sees surge in research staff and spending

Wage hikes make up largest part of increase in expenditure

Norway spent 77 billion Norwegian kroner (€7.5bn) on R&D in 2019, according to figures from the research institute Nifu and the government agency, Statistics Norway.

The 2019 figure represented an almost NOK4bn increase over 2018. Nifu also estimated that nearly 90,000 people worked in R&D in 2019, and that they worked for 48,700 man-years—around 2,000 man-years more than in 2018.
