Latest fiscal plan marks policy U-turn after years of declining expenditure on innovation

Finland’s government has U-turned on its research funding cuts, promising instead to spend more on R&D over the coming years.

The government announced in its 2023-26 fiscal plan that it would spend an extra €350 million a year on research and innovation. This is a reversal of the funding cuts that were announced in 2021, which would have reduced public R&D spending for the period.
