Research commissioner on sick leave but may keep some appointments remotely if able, Commission says

The EU research, innovation and education commissioner Mariya Gabriel—who announced on 10 October that she had tested positive for Covid-19—could participate in some appointments remotely this week, according to a European Commission spokesperson.

Responding to queries from Research Professional News on 20 October, the spokesperson said Gabriel was on sick leave and not participating in appointments, but that she might participate in appointments later in the week if her health allowed it. In the previous week, the spokesperson said Gabriel’s appointments for that week had been cancelled.

Gabriel announced on 5 October that she was self-isolating after one of her team tested positive for Covid-19. Her calendar for this week lists appointments including keynote speeches on 21, 22 and 23 October.
