Bloc doubles down on Arctic sustainability, using science diplomacy as a lever
The EU has overhauled its Arctic policy and put an emphasis on sustainability, supported by research, innovation and scientific diplomacy with Arctic nations.
Announcing a refreshed policy on 13 October, environment commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius said that the melting of ice and thawing of permafrost in the Arctic further accelerated climate change, with “huge knock-on effects”.
