This week: Horizon Europe’s budget, EU-UK ties, a visit to Mercury and more
The European Parliament is set to demand that the 2022 budget for Horizon Europe, the EU R&D programme, be boosted by €305 million, pushing back strongly against a €316m cut being sought by ministers in the Council of the EU. The sums are in relation to a June proposal from the European Commission that Horizon Europe should have a 2022 budget of €12.2 billion, making both the proposed cut and increase worth about 2.5 per cent of the initial proposal. MEPs in the Parliament’s Committee on Budgets agreed their stance on 28 September. The full Parliament will vote on its position in its 18-22 October session, launching negotiations with the Council.
