Research commissioner tells MEPs that member states should “invest smartly” and implement “necessary reforms”
Mariya Gabriel, the EU’s research and innovation commissioner, has said that the responsibility for increasing research excellence in lagging member states lies “primarily” with those individual countries.
Gabriel (pictured) said in written answers to questions from the European Parliament’s Committee on Budgetary Control that the European Commission was “aware of the diversity of situations regarding research and innovation in the EU member states”, after the committee flagged what it said were differences in the level of research excellence between countries.
