Some academics fear consequences of EU move to block cash for Viktor Orbán’s government

A move by the EU to block billions of euros earmarked for Hungary until the country addresses concerns about the rule of law and academic freedom has divided academia.

Some figures in the sector say the move is the only way to force changes in a nation that they view as increasingly unfriendly to academics and others who disagree with its direction. Others worry it could be a major blow for researchers in the country.
