Maria Leptin has discussed research freedom with representatives from Turkey and Germany amid broad concern

The president of the European Research Council, Maria Leptin, has held meetings with senior figures from Turkey and Germany about freedom of research.

Academic freedom has become a hot topic in the EU after concerns over the actions of some member state governments. Hungary in particular has been a focus of concern, with the European Court of Justice ruling in 2020 that the government had failed to comply with commitments to academic freedom in the country’s universities.
