‘Von der Leyen agenda risks seeing R&I as economic servant’

Universities and research eye post-election EU positions from re-elected commissioner and key committee chairs

A senior researcher has warned that the European Commission president’s focus on competitiveness risks R&I being perceived purely as an economic servant, as the research sector awaits directions from Ursula von der Leyen and the new leadership of European Parliament committees.

Von der Leyen was re-elected for a second five-year term by MEPs on 18 July, while chairs of key parliamentary committees have also been appointed following the European Parliament election.
