Academies ‘concerned’ EU court decision ensnares medical data

Need for ‘clear and implementable’ guidelines on sharing medical data with countries outside EU

European medical academies have warned they are are “concerned” about the effects of a 16 July decision by the European Court of Justice that invalidated an agreement for sharing personal data between the EU and the United States. They said the decision could hamper the sharing of medical data for research.

In an open letter to the EU justice commissioner, Didier Reynders, published on 1 October, the co-chairs of a joint academy project on the sharing of health data for research said that the decision regarding the Privacy Shield agreement increased the urgency of the need to address “major problems” in the transfer of data from the EU to countries outside the bloc.
