Preparatory phase of European patent court set to launch

Completion of Austrian ratification paves way for long-delayed court to rule on European patents

Europe will soon be able to launch long-delayed preparations for creating a court to rule on patents across 25 member countries, after the Austrian parliament ratified an agreement on it.

A protocol approved by the Austrian parliament on 2 December now only needs be deposited with the required authorities before the provisional application phase of the Unified Patent Court can begin. Other member countries had already ratified the agreement, making Austria’s the last ratification needed to reach the required number.
