UK’s data protection equivalent to EU’s, Commission says

If confirmed, decision will maintain flows of data from EU to UK, including for research

The European Commission has said it thinks the EU should recognise the UK’s protection of personal data as being equivalent to the EU’s—a decision that, if confirmed, would maintain the flow of data into the country from the bloc, including for use in research.

“Ensuring free and safe flow of personal data is crucial for businesses and citizens on both sides of the [English] Channel,” said Commission vice-president Věra Jourová, reflecting a sentiment felt by many research organisations.
