Parliament adopts report seeking AI optimism and funding

But lead MEP decries loss of call to update EU data legislation

The European Parliament has called for more EU investment in artificial intelligence research and for regulations around AI to be proportionate to the risks of a system’s particular use.

Committees in the Parliament are currently discussing planned legislation, called the “AI Act”, for classifying and restricting the use of AI systems. Some with “unacceptable” risks could be banned and others would be subject to special requirements and obligations to gain EU market access.
