Former research commissioner joins university’s European studies unit as faculty and an advisor

Carlos Moedas, the former European commissioner for research and innovation, has begun a five-year post as a visiting professor at University College London’s European Institute, and has become a member of the institute’s advisory board.

Moedas (pictured left), who served as commissioner for research, innovation and science under the 2014-19 European Commission of Jean-Claude Juncker, said on Twitter on 5 October he was “very honoured” by the appointment.

In its newsletter, UCL’s European Institute said Moedas would get involved in its “public, advisory and student-facing activities”.

Moedas’s colleagues in the broader UCL faculty include the economist Mariana Mazzucato (pictured right), who advised him and the Commission on the targeted missions it is introducing to its 2021-27 R&D programme, Horizon Europe.
