Elite life sciences organisation appointed Fiona Watt after bullying investigation at her previous employer

Embo, the European molecular biology organisation, has defended the hiring process for its director, Fiona Watt, after questions were raised over why it was not aware of a bullying investigation into Watt at her former employer until after her appointment.

The investigation into Watt’s conduct occurred when she was in her previous role as head of the UK Medical Research Council. It was carried out on behalf of the MRC’s parent organisation, the national funding agency UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), in early 2021 and has led to ongoing funding sanctions against her.
