Lack of UK backing for freer exchange of students with European universities prompts German disappointment

The UK government’s opposition to joining an EU youth mobility scheme, which would open the door to freer movement of students between universities, has prompted disappointment in Germany.

Earlier this week, The Times quoted a government source as saying the UK would have to “give ground” on an EU proposal for a youth mobility scheme on work and study for the under 30s, if the UK wanted progress on wider issues such as food checks. But a government spokesperson has since quashed the idea.
