Loss of research from commissioner’s title reveals shifting tides in Brussels, says Peter Fisch

Mariya Gabriel will be the new EU Commissioner for Innovation and Youth. Rather than her nomination itself, it’s her job title that has received the most attention, and specifically what’s missing from it—education, culture… and research. 

These omissions might have no major impact on the ground, and they might even be rectified during the next steps of the nomination process. But they send two important messages.
