As Europe hails Biden’s victory, we must not lose sight of the stakes
The Trump administration may soon be consigned to history, but it is still casting a shadow—over research as well as wider society. Republican president Donald Trump will leave behind an America shattered by Covid-19, a wrecked climate deal and a border service in the habit of racially profiling visiting researchers.
European leaders have been quick to paint Democratic president-elect Joe Biden as the balm that will heal these wounds. So far, the signs are good. As this issue of Research Europe was being finalised, he had just announced a taskforce of public health experts to tackle a pandemic that has killed nearly 240,000 Americans. The group includes immunologist Rick Bright, who was fired from a previous taskforce by Trump after telling the media that early warnings about the virus’ spread and deadliness were ignored.
