However nerve-wracking it may be, most PhD students pass their final viva exam, in which examiners dissect and challenge their work. Once that ordeal is out of the way, the quality and integrity of a PhD thesis is rarely revisited.

There are lots of reasons to let a dubious PhD lie. Investigations take a long time and can jeopardise the reputation of both the person charged and their university. People move to different institutions with different regulations.
