Back page gossip from the 14 October issue of Research Europe
Keeping the channels open
Switzerland remains frozen out of talks on association to Horizon Europe, the EU R&D programme (see P6). Meanwhile, however, the EU R&D commissioner Mariya Gabriel visited the country early this month, tweeting that she was having “important meetings” about research and innovation, as well as about other parts of her portfolio, such as youth and sport. These included a visit to Europe’s organisation for nuclear research, Cern, which surely is a prime example of what researchers in the EU can achieve when they work with colleagues in countries outside the bloc on shared research aims. No doubt a few Swiss leaders took advantage of the visit to reiterate the importance of Horizon Europe association, not only for Switzerland but also for European ambitions more broadly.
