Environmental monitoring must improve, report says

Environment Aotearoa 2022 report calls for better use of environmental research in New Zealand

Environmental degradation in New Zealand is continuing, with the latest national report showing poorer air quality, more frequent droughts and high levels of threat to reptile and bird species.

The Environment Aotearoa 2022 report, highlighting the need for improvements in how environmental research is carried out and used, was issued on 14 April by Stats New Zealand. It shows that 39 of New Zealand’s 51 indigenous freshwater fish are considered threatened, and that glacial ice levels have decreased by 35 per cent since 1978.
