UK genomics centre will award annual fellowship to early career researchers from Black heritage backgrounds
The Wellcome Sanger Institute, a genomics research centre outside Cambridge, has launched a fellowship worth up to £180,000 over three years exclusively for early career researchers from a Black heritage background.
Black researchers are often underrepresented in UK research. Of 440 fellowships awarded by UK Research and Innovation in 2019-20, fewer than five went to Black researchers, according to data published in October by the UK’s national research funder.
