Axed funding means job cuts and office closures at British Council, but government defends support

MPs have decried cuts to funding for the British Council as “extremely short-sighted”, as the organisation prepares to close 20 offices overseas due to a squeeze on its finances.

The closures come amid controversy over how reductions in the overseas aid budget are undermining the government’s promotion of its Global Britain brand.
