AI exodus to industry feared

UK universities are struggling to compete with the six-figure salaries offered to specialists in artificial intelligence by big tech companies, AI and computing researchers have warned.

Maja Pantic, a professor of affective and behavioural computing at Imperial College London, said professors in her field were leaving academia to work for big tech companies. “We all talk about education and re-skilling people and having PhD and masters students in AI, but who will educate these people if all academics go to big companies?” she said at a Westminster eForum seminar in London on 4 December.

At the same event, AI professor David Hogg from the University of Leeds said he found it difficult to advise postdocs who had been offered top salaries in the private sector to stay in academia.
