Business funding for UK R&D dropped in real terms, ONS shows

2020 drop is not surprising given impacts of pandemic, but is “not ideal”, experts say

Expenditure on R&D by UK businesses fell by around £840 million in real terms—around three per cent—between 2019 and 2020, from almost £27.8 billion to £26.9m, data from the Office for National Statistics show.

The data come from the government’s Business Enterprise Research and Development survey, published by ONS on 19 November.
