Raab slashes BEIS aid budget for R&I and climate by 30 per cent

Cut branded a ‘devastating blow’, despite foreign secretary claiming R&D funds are ringfenced

The government appears to have slashed UK aid spending on research and climate change, despite the foreign secretary Dominic Raab claiming that R&D spending is ringfenced.

Figures published on 26 January show that the allocation of aid money to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, which supports both the Global Challenges Research Fund and the Newton Fund, is £706 million for 2021-22.
