Call comes as data suggest Omicron variant could drive surge in UK hospital admissions

Researchers including the government’s own advisers are piling pressure on UK politicians to impose further Covid restrictions, amid concerns that the more transmissible Omicron variant could fuel a devastating rise in hospital admissions over Christmas.

According to newly released minutes from a 16 December meeting of the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, admissions in England could reach at least 3,000 per day without further interventions—such limits on how many people can meet and closing some venues. This level that could rapidly overwhelm stretched doctors and nurses.
